Wax On, Bloom On: The No-Fuss Amaryllis That Doesn’t Need a Drop of Water
Somewhere between the first frost and the first twinkle light, a very special bulb arrives at The Watering Can: the waxed amaryllis. It sits on your table in a coat of colourful wax, needs no soil and no watering can (yes, we see the irony), and still bursts into enormous blooms. Come meet this year’s collection.
NO SOIL
The bulb is sealed in decorative wax and stands on a sturdy base. Nothing to pot, nothing to spill.
NO WATERING
Everything the flower needs is already stored inside the bulb. Truly. Put the watering can down.
ALL THE PERSONALITY
Colourful finishes, playful patterns and festive designs, with something for every style and every corner of the house.
GIFT-READY
Easy to carry, easy to care for, and a lovely thing to receive when the days get short.
So, how does a bulb bloom without water?
An amaryllis bulb is a little pantry. Over its growing season it stores up the energy and moisture it needs for one spectacular flowering. A waxed bulb simply asks it to spend that stash right where it sits. The wax coating slows moisture loss, so the bulb has what it needs to send up a flower stalk and open its big, trumpet-shaped blooms.
That is why we call our collection “waterless.” There is no soil to keep damp and no schedule to remember. You choose your favourite, find it a spot, and let nature do the rest.
The only real work is the choosing. Wax finish, pattern, festive flair? That is the hard part, and we are happy to help you decide.
Meet this year’s designs
This year’s collection is full of personality. There are rich, colourful wax finishes, playful patterns and festive designs, and each one makes a lovely decoration long before the first bud opens. A bulb in its wax coat looks wonderful on a mantel, a sideboard or a kitchen counter, so you get weeks of charm before the show even starts.
Shopping from home? You can explore the amaryllis designs online through the link in our Instagram bio at @thewateringcan. Prefer to see the colours in person? Visit us in-store and browse the full assortment. Photos are lovely, but wax finishes really come alive in real light.
Care that fits on a sticky note
- Find a bright spot — Bright, indirect light is best. A windowsill that does not get harsh midday sun is ideal.
- Keep it comfortably cool — Normal room temperature is fine. Skip the spots right beside a heating vent or a roaring fireplace.
- Give it a quarter turn now and then — Amaryllis stalks lean toward the light. A gentle turn keeps the stem growing nice and straight.
- Leave the wax alone — Resist the urge to peel or poke. The coating is what keeps the bulb happy.
- Do not water — Really. No watering is needed, so your only job is to enjoy it.
A note for Niagara gardeners (zone 6b)
Here in Niagara, we sit in growing zone 6b, with an average last spring frost around May 15th and a first fall frost around October 15th. That frost date has already come and gone this year. Amaryllis are tender, tropical-origin bulbs, so they are not hardy in a zone 6b garden and belong indoors through our cold months. That makes them perfect companions for the long, grey stretch between now and spring.
A waxed amaryllis is an indoor, enjoy-it-now flower. Think of it as a bouquet that arrives as a bulb and blooms on its own schedule.
Why they make such a good gift
Holiday season is just around the corner, and a waxed amaryllis solves a lot of gift problems at once. It travels well, it needs no care instructions longer than a sticky note, and it gives the recipient something to watch as it grows. Pop one on a hostess’s table or send one to a friend who swears she cannot keep plants alive. This is the one for her.
Buying for yourself counts too. A little something special for your own home is one of the best reasons to shop.
