Spells, Soil & Succulents: Your Guide to Our Halloween DIY Kits

Some Halloween traditions involve carving, some involve candy, and ours involves getting your hands happily dirty. Our Halloween DIY Kits bring a little greenhouse magic to your kitchen table: plants, playful decorations, a container and step-by-step instructions, all in one box. Here’s how to make the most of yours, from the first scoop of soil to keeping your creation thriving long after the last trick-or-treater has gone home.

Why a Kit Beats Another Plastic Pumpkin

We love a good spooky display as much as anyone. But there’s something special about decor you made yourself, and that’s still growing come November. A living Halloween arrangement gives you the fun of the season plus a houseplant that keeps going once the costumes are packed away.

It’s also a lovely way to slow down for an hour. Put on some music, gather the family (or just a mug of something warm from our café), and spend an evening creating together. No experience needed. If you can scoop, press and decorate, you’re ready. Every kit comes with clear instructions, so nobody’s left guessing.

Building Your Kit, Step by Step

1
Set the stage

Lay down newspaper or an old tea towel. Soil travels, especially when little hands are involved. Unpack everything and read through the instructions once before you begin, so you can picture the finished design.

2
Fill your container

Add soil until the container is about two-thirds full. Press it lightly with your fingers. You want it settled, not packed tight, so roots can breathe and water can drain.

3
Plant with care

Gently ease each plant from its nursery pot by squeezing the sides, never by tugging the stem. Loosen the roots a little, nestle them in, and top up the soil around them so each plant sits at the same depth it was growing before.

4
Decorate with flair

Now for the fun part. Add your Halloween decorations, keeping them on top of the soil rather than pushed deep against the roots. Step back, tilt your head, adjust. Every design ends up a little different, and that’s the charm.

5
Water lightly and find a bright spot

Give a small drink right at the base of the plants, then place your creation somewhere bright. Follow any plant-specific care notes in your kit, as different plants have different thirsts.

Keep it cozy, keep it indoors. Here in Niagara (zone 6b), our average first fall frost arrives around October 15th, so late-October nights are often near or below freezing. The plants in your kit are happiest as indoor companions. Display your creation on a porch for a photo, then bring it back inside where it’s warm.

Keeping Your Creation Happy Into November

As the days shorten in late fall, light becomes the thing your plants miss most. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. Turn the container a quarter-turn every week or so, and it will grow evenly instead of leaning toward the glass.

Go easy on the watering. Indoor plants grow more slowly in the darker months, so they drink less. Check the soil with your finger before you water. If it’s still damp an inch down, wait a few more days. Keep your creation away from heat vents and cold, drafty doorways. Both can stress plants quickly.

Little Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overwatering — It’s the most common way houseplants are lost. Less is more, especially in fall and winter.
  • Burying the decorations — Keep spooky accents on the surface so they don’t crowd or damage the roots.
  • Leaving it outside overnight — Late-October frost in zone 6b can damage tender plants in a single night.
  • Skipping the light — A dim corner might suit a ghost, but your plants need a bright window to stay healthy.
  • Rushing it — Take your time. The joy is in the making, not just the finished piece.

From Halloween Haunt to Year-Round Houseplant

Here’s the best part: when Halloween wraps up, simply lift out the decorations and you’ll still have a healthy little plant arrangement. Swap in pinecones and a sprig of greenery for late fall, or a few twinkly accents for the holidays. One kit, a whole season of styling.

If your plants eventually outgrow their container, come chat with our greenhouse team in Vineland. We’ve been helping Niagara gardeners for more than 25 years, and we’re always happy to help you choose the next pot, the right soil or a new plant friend.

There’s a moment, right after the last decoration goes in, when everyone at the table goes quiet and just admires what they made. That’s the moment we put these kits together for.
