Pot Luck, Autumn Edition: Inside Our Designers’ Fall Planters
A little seasonal colour goes a long way. Our designers have spent the past few weeks happily up to their elbows in soil, mixing bright blooms, bold tropicals and cozy autumn details into custom planters that are each one of a kind. Here’s what goes into them, and how to keep yours looking lovely as Niagara slides from golden October into frosty November.
What Goes Into a Watering Can Fall Planter
Mums That Mean Business
Chrysanthemums are the classic heartbeat of an autumn pot: rust, bronze, butter yellow, plum and blush. They handle a light frost with grace. In a container, treat them as seasonal colour rather than a long-term perennial, since potted fall mums rarely make it through a zone 6b winter.
Tropicals With Attitude
This is where our designers love to colour outside the lines. Crotons, with their painted red, orange and gold leaves, look like autumn itself, and they add a lush, unexpected twist to a porch pot. Just know they’re sun-seekers from warm places: they sulk below about 10°C and won’t survive frost.
Ornamental Kale & Cabbage
The tough guys of the fall planter. Their purple, cream and pink centres actually get brighter once our nights turn cool, and they’ll keep going through frost after frost. When everything else has called it a season, kale is still standing there looking fabulous.
The secret to a planter that stops people on the sidewalk? Mix the hardy with the dramatic, and plan for a few pieces to bow out early.
Texture: Grasses, Heuchera & Trailers
Feathery grasses and sedges add movement, heuchera brings deep caramel and burgundy foliage, and trailing plants soften the edges of the pot. Many of these are hardy perennials in Niagara, which means they can have a second life in your garden once the planter is done.
The Autumn Details
Mini pumpkins, gourds, pine cones, branches, wheat and the occasional woodland friend tucked in among the leaves. These are the finishing touches that make each planter feel personal, and the reason no two of our designs are ever quite the same.
Keeping Your Planter Happy in Zone 6b
Here in Niagara we garden in zone 6b, and our average first fall frost lands around October 15th. That means the next few weeks are the planter’s big moment, with a few chilly surprises along the way. The good news: a well-built fall container is designed for exactly this kind of weather.
Keep an eye on the forecast. On the first nights dipping toward freezing, a light sheet or frost cloth draped over the pot overnight (never plastic) will buy your mums and tropicals extra weeks. Take it off in the morning so the plants can breathe and soak up the sun. Once the tropicals start to look tired, simply pull them out and tuck in another kale, a few pansies or some evergreen boughs. Your planter just changes outfits.
A Few Simple Care Habits
- Keep watering — Cooler air fools people, but pots still dry out, especially on breezy days. Check by pushing a finger a few centimetres into the soil; if it’s dry, water until it runs out the bottom. Keep going until the soil freezes.
- Find the light — Most fall planters are happiest with at least a half day of sun. Mums in full shade tend to open fewer buds.
- Deadhead as you go — Pinch off faded mum blooms and yellowing leaves to keep things tidy and encourage the remaining buds.
- Skip the fertilizer — Plants are slowing down for the season. They don’t need a push now.
- Give perennials a second home — Heuchera, sedges and hardy grasses can be planted into the garden by late October so their roots settle before the ground freezes. Potted roots are far more exposed to winter cold than roots in the ground.
Small Pots, Statement Pots & Everything Between
Our designers have been building everything from little tabletop pieces, perfect for a front step or a hostess gift, to big statement planters that anchor a whole porch. Every one is made by hand, right here, and each combination is a little different depending on what’s blooming and what caught the designer’s eye that morning.
If you’d love this kind of seasonal colour without lifting a trowel, our Urn Club delivers designer-made seasonal planter inserts throughout the year (Basic $200 / Premium $275 per year). And if you’d rather get your hands dirty, keep an eye on our Workshop Village, where our seasonal planting workshops welcome every skill level.
A LITTLE COLOUR GOES A LONG WAY
Fall planters are a celebration of the in-between: the last flush of bloom, the first crisp nights, and the cozy feeling of coming home to something beautiful by the door. Mix a few tough plants with a few show-offs, water them well, and enjoy every golden week this season gives us.
