Just Autumn Enough: Meet Autumn Charm, Our In-Between Bouquet
Late September in Niagara is a funny little season. The afternoons still feel like August, the mornings smell like October, and nobody’s quite ready to pack away the sandals. Autumn Charm is our love letter to that in-between moment: a bouquet with one foot in summer and one foot in fall.
What’s in the Vase
Vibrant Orange Gerbera Daisies
Gerberas are pure, uncomplicated joy. Their big, flat faces are the closest thing a flower has to a grin, and in this shade of orange they glow like a pumpkin on a porch step. They bring the summer brightness that makes this design feel so cheerful.
Sunset Mums
If gerberas are summer’s grin, mums are autumn’s handshake: steady, warm and dependable. Our sunset-toned mums layer in rust, coral and gold, and they’re one of the longest-lasting cut flowers you can bring home. They’ll often still look lovely after the rest of the bouquet has taken its bow.
Locally Grown Niagara Sunflowers
These are the stars of the show, and they didn’t travel far to get here. Niagara sunflowers bloom from mid-summer right up until our first fall frost, so late September is a golden window to enjoy them. Fresh, local and a little bit sunny, just like us.
Autumn Charm is available exclusively online, ready for pickup or delivery across Niagara.
A Slender Vase with a Beaded Handle
We chose a tall, slim vase so every bloom gets room to shine without the bouquet feeling heavy. The beaded handle is a little flourish of charm (hence the name). It’s the kind of vessel you’ll want to keep and refill long after these flowers have finished.
A Palette Made for Right Now
Orange, gold, coral and green. It’s colourful without shouting, and seasonal without going full cornucopia. Autumn Charm suits a kitchen table, a desk that needs cheering up, or a friend who’s still mourning the end of patio season.
Keeping Autumn Charm Happy at Home
A few small habits will help your bouquet last as long as possible. Each of these flowers has its own personality, so here’s how to keep everyone content.
- Top up the water daily — Sunflowers are famously thirsty and can drink a vase down faster than you’d expect. Check the level every morning with your coffee.
- Keep gerberas in shallow water — Their fuzzy stems are prone to softening if they sit too deep. A few inches of fresh, clean water is all they need.
- Give stems a fresh cut — Every two or three days, snip about 2 cm off each stem at an angle with clean, sharp scissors and refresh the water.
- Mind the neighbours — Keep your vase away from heat vents, sunny windowsills and the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which makes flowers age faster.
- Edit as you go — Mums usually outlast the others. When a gerbera or sunflower fades, pull it out and enjoy the mums on their own for another week or so.
Why Local Sunflowers Matter
We’re proud to work with Niagara growers whenever the season allows. Local sunflowers are cut closer to the day they reach you, which means fresher blooms and a longer vase life. They also carry a little piece of this place with them: the same sun and soil that grow our peaches and grapes.
Here in zone 6b, our average first fall frost arrives around mid-October. That puts a natural end date on the local sunflower season, so these late-September blooms are one of the last chances of the year to enjoy them fresh from the field. Enjoy them while they’re here.
Love the Look? Bring It Into Your Garden
If Autumn Charm has you craving more colour outdoors, garden mums are the natural next step. In Niagara’s zone 6b, hardy mums have the best chance of coming back next year when they go in the ground by early to mid-September, so their roots can settle before the frost. Planted now, they’re best treated as gorgeous seasonal colour for your porch, urns and beds through October.
Want to give yours a fighting chance at overwintering anyway? Leave the old stems standing after they finish blooming, and add a layer of mulch once the ground freezes. Gerberas, on the other hand, aren’t hardy in our climate. Enjoy them as cut flowers, patio annuals or a bright windowsill houseplant.
A LITTLE SUMMER, A LOT OF FALL
Autumn Charm is for anyone who isn’t quite ready to say goodbye to summer, but can’t resist a sunset mum. It’s bright, local and made by hand in our Niagara studio. Consider it a warm welcome to the season ahead.
