Why Succulents Win Every Time
Succulents are the friendly gateway plant — the ones that forgive the forgetful, delight the beginner, and still charm the seasoned plant hoarder. They store water in their plump little leaves, which means they’d genuinely rather you left them alone than fussed over them. For anyone who has ever loved a plant to death with too much attention, this is the plant that finally says: relax, I’ve got this.

Succulent Care in Four Easy Steps
Succulents are sun worshippers. A south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal, especially through our shorter Niagara winters when daylight is in short supply. Leggy, stretching growth is your plant politely asking for more light.
Soak the soil thoroughly, then let it dry out completely before the next drink. In practice that’s roughly every two to three weeks indoors, and less in winter. When in doubt, wait. Overwatering is the number one way a happy succulent turns to mush.
Succulents hate wet feet. If your planter has a drainage hole, wonderful — empty the saucer after watering. If it doesn’t (many decorative pots don’t), water sparingly and tip out any excess so roots never sit in a puddle.
Normal room temperature suits them perfectly. Just keep them away from cold, draughty windows in the depths of a Niagara January, when the glass itself can get frosty enough to nip tender leaves.
💡 Gritty is good. Succulents thrive in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix rather than standard potting soil. It mimics their native desert homes and lets water rush through instead of lingering around the roots.
Living With Succulents in Zone 6b
Here in Niagara we sit comfortably in growing zone 6b, which means our winters dip well below what any succulent could survive outdoors. Treat these little charmers as year-round houseplants — they’ll happily live on your windowsill through every season.
That said, they love a summer holiday. Once our average last spring frost has safely passed (around May 15th), you can move hardier succulents outside to a bright, sheltered spot to soak up the season. Just be sure to bring them back indoors well before the first fall frost, which arrives around October 15th. Ease them into direct outdoor sun gradually, though — even sun-lovers can scorch if they go from a windowsill to full noon glare overnight.
The Most Common Succulent Slip-Ups
- Loving them too much — Overwatering is the classic mistake. Squishy, translucent, yellowing leaves mean it’s time to ease off, not water more.
- Too little light — A succulent stretching tall and pale with big gaps between leaves is reaching for a sunnier home. Move it closer to the window.
- Pots with no escape route — Decorative pots without drainage are gorgeous but need a careful hand. Water lightly and never let them pool.
- The wrong soil — Dense, moisture-holding potting mix keeps roots too wet. Reach for a gritty succulent blend instead.
