May Two-Four, But Make It Flowers: Your Victoria Day Weekend at The Watering Can

Victoria Day weekend is practically made for wandering through gardens, breathing in blooms, and treating yourself to something sweet. This long weekend, The Watering Can has you covered — with beautiful things to see, fresh things to plant, and a whole lot of joy waiting among the flowers.

THE FLOWER SHOP

From fresh-cut stems to curated arrangements, our flower shop is bursting with seasonal colour. Pick up a bouquet to brighten your home or surprise someone you love this long weekend.

TROPICAL GREENHOUSE

Step inside our lush tropical greenhouse and escape into another world entirely. Towering tropicals, rare specimens, and the kind of verdant warmth that makes you forget you’re in Ontario.

SEASONAL GARDEN CENTRE

Victoria Day weekend is traditionally the biggest planting weekend in Ontario — and our Seasonal Garden Centre is stocked and ready, with annuals, perennials, veggie starts, and more.

PASTRY MARKET & CAFÉ

All of our baked goods are made in-house daily. Whether you’re after a morning coffee, a proper lunch, or a sweet afternoon treat, our Pastry Market is the perfect mid-browse reward.

The Long Weekend Tradition Worth Starting

In Niagara, Victoria Day weekend has a very specific feeling to it. The frost risk finally lifts — our average last spring frost date in zone 6b is right around May 15th, which means this weekend is the unofficial “all clear” for gardeners across the region. The days are long, the energy is festive, and there’s something in the air that makes people want to get their hands in the dirt.

At The Watering Can, we’ve spent over 25 years being part of that tradition. There’s genuinely something joyful about watching families wander through our greenhouse and garden centre on a Victoria Day weekend — kids pointing at cacti, parents loading wagons with geraniums, everyone just a little bit happier than they were when they arrived. It’s one of our favourite weekends of the entire year, and we’d love for you to be part of it.

🌿 Zone 6b gardeners, this is your green light. Victoria Day weekend marks the safe end of frost season in Niagara — now’s the moment to get warm-season annuals, tropicals, and veggie starts into the ground for good.

This Weekend’s Hours — Everything You Need to Know

  • Friday & Saturday — Both locations open during regular hours. A wonderful time to come at a relaxed pace before the holiday rush hits.
  • Sunday — We’ll be closed at both locations. Rest up, do a little weeding, and dream about what you spotted on Saturday.
  • Victoria Day Monday — Our Vineland location (3725 King St) will be open 9:00am–5:00pm. Our Downtown St. Catharines boutique (18 James St) will be closed for the holiday.
  • No Deliveries on Monday — Delivery service won’t be running on the holiday. All other days are business as usual for orders!

Make a Proper Day of It

If you’re planning a Monday visit to our Vineland destination, we genuinely recommend giving yourself more than a quick pop-in. The property at 3725 King St is designed to be lingered over — between the flower shop, the tropical greenhouse, the Seasonal Garden Centre, and our Workshop Village, there’s easily a happy half-day’s worth of exploring to be done.

Fuel up at the Pastry Market (everything made fresh in-house daily), pick up a statement plant for your living room, load up on annuals for your containers, and end the day with something beautiful in the back of your car. That’s a Victoria Day well spent.

What to Pick Up This Weekend

  • Summer annuals — Petunias, impatiens, begonias, geraniums, marigolds: zone 6b is officially clear for all of them after mid-May.
  • Tropical houseplants — The warm nights ahead make this the perfect time to add a new tropical or move existing ones outdoors for the season.
  • Vegetable & herb starts — Tomatoes, peppers, basil, and cucumbers are all ready to go into your garden beds this weekend.
  • Container fillers — Thriller, filler, spiller — we have everything you need to build stunning planters for your porch, patio, or balcony.
  • Perennials — An excellent time to plant; they’ll establish through the summer and come back bigger every year.

A Little Something Extra While You’re Here

If you haven’t experienced our Tropical Garden Tea yet, Victoria Day weekend is the perfect excuse. At $47 per person, it’s an intimate tea service held inside our tropical greenhouse — surrounded by lush greenery, with a proper pot of tea and all the trimmings. Seatings run Tuesday through Saturday, and advance booking is recommended.

Also worth knowing about: our Urn Club, which delivers professionally planted seasonal inserts for your outdoor urns twice a year (Basic $200/year, Premium $275/year). It’s one of those things you hear about once and immediately want to sign up for.
